What topics are important for what I want to do?

Hi

So far I am here only talking about Powershell because from my understanding, it’s important for what my ultimate goal.

I want to learn more about cyber security. I want to learn to write a little bit of program in network and looking into virus, not just get anti virus programs, caution about opening emails and texts. I have been searching, they said Powershell is one of the important thing to learn. I spent a few weeks on writing html so I can look inside the html files. My next plan is to study windows 11 deeper. People have been saying learn Python and Javascript is important as they are used to write Client and Server side programs.

Bottom line, I want to know your opinion and how deep I need to study PowerShell for what I want to do? I have no intention to be expert of PowerShell coding just stepping stone to my goal.

Thanks

Alan

Anyone have any opinion?

One reason for the lack of replies, I suspect, is that wanting ‘to learn more about cyber security’ doesn’t really give anyone an idea of what your goal is. I’ve worked with many security professionals who couldn’t read PowerShell, let alone write a script. It simply wasn’t part of their remit or required for their job role.

To give you an idea of how broad the term is, here’s a site that lists different roles that fall under the ‘cyber security’ banner:

Perhaps you could elaborate on exactly what you’re trying to achieve. PowerShell is a brilliant, flexible tool, but it’s not always the right one.

I’ll chime in as someone who currently works in cyber security and uses PowerShell constantly: PowerShell is absolutely not necessary for cyber security. Most of my coworkers and peers in the space do not use PowerShell. Nor do they use Python, or Javascript, or really much of any scripting/programming language. Mostly because it’s not part of their jobs.
I do know some people that do a lot of coding as part of their cyber security careers but it’s not a prerequisite.
I think more important than learning PowerShell would be to learn general IT. Get a job doing help desk or desktop support. Learn how people interact with their computers. Learn how systems fail. Learn how everything is connected. Learn how it’s always DNS (jk).

PowerShell is great and I love it. I use it all day every day because I love it and I find ways to make my job easier through it. But it’s certainly not required.

To quote Ricky Bobby: “I wanna go fast”
and PowerShell helps me do that.
