How to build a multi level configuration

Here is the scenario;

  1. All our servers have 6 basic setting
  2. there are two basic types after that, web and sql.
  3. there are multiple web and sql types.

So is it possible to build up a server with three different configuration scripts?

I recall reading something about this, but I don’t remember where or the details.
