Force PowerShell Remoting to use TLS 1.2

Hello,

Certificate mapping one-to-one

How do I force PowerShell to connect (Client Hello for handshake) using TLS 1.2 and not 1.0 or 1.1?

I have seen this recommendation (below) but I would like to see an example implementation inside a remote connection .ps1 script:

[Net.ServicePointManager]::SecurityProtocol = [Net.SecurityProtocolType]::TLS12

*PS I included the above .NET statement in my connection script which did not seem to have any effect.

Best regards,

Jason

Hi Jason,

I believe the only way to enforce TLS 1.2 for every application on a box including WinRM client/service is to disable the other SCHANNEL protocols in the Registry on the client side. However, as far as I know you’ll also need to enable TLS 1.2 on the server side for any OS before Windows Server 2016 and most likely want to disable protocols below TLS 1.2.

If you don’t want to apply Registry files you could download the IIS Crypto CLI tool (Nartac Software - IIS Crypto) and execute specifying the PCI 3.1 template.

iiscryptocli /template pci31 /reboot

IIS Crypto also configures ciphers, hashes and key exchange settings which are also very important for TLS security.
