Hello

I have 5.1.17134.228 PowerShell Version.

I installed RSAT on my computer (Windows 10 Pro) but I’m missing help file about_ActiveDirectory_Filter:

PS C:\> Get-Help *about_act*

about_ActivityCommonParameters HelpFile Describes the parameters that Windows PowerShell

I did Update-Help -Module ActiveDirectory -Force but it didnt’ help.

Lucky you - you can get everything online …

Digging deeper i found out that after RSAT installation you are missing help files in C:\Windows\System32\WindowsPowerShell\v1.0\Modules\ActiveDirectory\en-US

Directory in Wndows Server 2012:

Mode LastWriteTime Length Name
---- ------------- ------ ----

Directory in Windows 10 after RSAT installation:

Mode LastWriteTime Length Name
---- ------------- ------ ----
-a---- 10/8/2016 6:53 AM 3072 ActiveDirectoryPowerShellResources.dll.mui
-a---- 10/29/2013 1:56 PM 5601969 Microsoft.ActiveDirectory.Management.dll-help.xml

I copied missing help files from Windows Server 2012 to Windows 10 and now it works.

The proper way to do this is.

You have to download and install the RSAT tools for whatever client version of Windows you are running.

Win 7

Win 8

Win 10

Or just use implicit PSRemoting to any DC and proxy the cmdlets to your PS session.

You still need to run this as an administrator at least once…

Update-Help -Force

Actually, this command you should set to run on a regular basis, via a scheduled task, just so you don’t have to think about it. Personally, my task runs weekly.

If You look at my first post i did exactly what suppose to be a proper way:

  1. Install RSAT

  2. Update-Help - Force

It did put activedirectory help files in my system but without about help files.
